Join Us In Shaping the Future of Transportation

We’re actively seeking partners, innovators, and problem-solvers to help us tackle these challenges and bring bold ideas to life. Whether you have potential solutions, expertise, or new ideas, we’d love to collaborate and learn from your perspective.

We're committed to tackling the pressing challenges of school transportation in New York City. Our team is currently brainstorming innovative solutions and we’re happy to collaborate with others. Here’s what we’re currently working on:

  • Providing better feedback to bus drivers and support them

  • Using our GPS and maintenance data to predict vehicle breakdowns

  • Analyzing our safety and performance data to make our drivers safer

  • Improving our learning systems to enhance the accuracy of anticipated arrival times

  • Developing systems to respond to parent concerns

  • Dynamically understanding traffic challenges and alerting vehicles of traffic to reliably deliver on-time service without compromising safety

  • Making our maintenance operations more sustainable

  • Developing an employee health program that enriches our colleagues’ lives

  • Using our six depots as resources for their communities and our city

Let’s develop tech together.

Here are some of the systems and apps we’ve created:

  • NNS: The NYCSBUS Notification System, a fast, low cost system built using Uber’s Hexagonal Hierarchical Spatial Index to look at vehicles on route and predict arrival time and alert users via text message.

  • Incident Management: With Amazon we are building a large, general purpose incident management system for school busing.

  • NYS Bus Inspection Scans: Like other states, NY inspects buses and issues inspection certificates. These come by email, we have a system to scan those records as they arrive and write them to a database.

We’re always developing technology to make busing better and would be happy to work with others.

To use a transportation metaphor, collaboration is a two way street. We pride ourselves in being a data-centric school bus company. We collect extensive data on our fleet and routes to optimize our service delivery and are happy to share this data to make transportation, busing, and our city better.

Want Data?

Here’s some of the data we track and materials we have access to:

  • 800 buses traveling 40,000 miles per day on regular routes across NYC. They are tracked by GPS that monitors driving behavior, mechanical performance is tied to maintenance records

  • A small but growing electric bus fleet and planned vehicle-to-grid and vehicle-to-building experiments

  • 2000 employees whose health and performance we monitor

  • Six acres of physical space across New York City

  • A lot of scrap metal, oil and parts

  • Subject matter experts in transportation, logistics, vehicle maintenance and electric vehicles.
